Packing became quite a journey in itself, the sorting of her belongings was carried out with an analytical assessment. The new and mature Katie discarded her childish treasures along with her now insignificant and obsolete childhood it seemed. Reminders were all too unsettling to her new resolve. To an observer, it could be concluded that she was removing all traces of a life that was no more, a life that had lost its significance. She straightened up and placed the music box in a crate of rejected toys and broken dreams. The ballerina continued twirling despite its rejection, and the music flowed along with her tears. She reached down, picked up the music box again and clutched it to her breast. As her tears subsided she wrapped it carefully and placed it in her suitcase.

She’d written to Lachlan after her father placed the baby up for adoption, telling him of his son’s birth and where she was staying. She’d cried herself to sleep every night for weeks waiting for him to come, but he hadn’t. Finally one morning she had to acknowledge what she already knew deep down in her heart, it was over. He either didn’t love her or he wasn’t man enough to come for her.
